Raffles
1939—Sam Wood, director—starring David Niven, Olivia de Havilland and Dame May Whitty
A.J. Raffles, the “Amateur Cracksman”—renowned cricket player by day, daring gentleman thief by night—was an enormously popular literary creation of author E.W. Hornung. Raffles inspired numerous silent films, as well as an early talkie starring Ronald Colman. In 1939, the screenplay from the Colman movie was reworked to create a vehicle for David Niven, whose light comic style perfectly seasons this clever and delightful crime film. Olivia de Havilland provides both romantic and practical support; and the talented supporting cast, under Sam Wood’s direction, make Raffles a refreshing chaser to a weekend of great films.
