Vintage Film Festival - Pather Panchali

1955—Satyajit Ray, director—starring Subir Banerjee, Kanu Banerjee, Karuna Banerjee

Pather Panchali (meaning “Song of the Little Road” in Bengali) was the first film to be directed by the renowned Indian moviemaker Satyajit Ray. It is generally considered the greatest of his 29 feature films; indeed, it is considered one of “the great movies”. Ray was inspired to become a filmmaker—and hence to make Pather Panchali—by seeing Vittorio de Sica’s Bicycle Thieves. Ray’s film, like de Sica’s, has neorealistic elements (location shooting, some amateur actors), which help it to capture what Ray admired in the source novel: “its humanism, its lyricism, and its ring of truth”. This cinematic story of Apu and his family won a host of awards, including Best Human Document at Cannes.

Pather Panchali will be screened in Bengali with English subtitles.
