Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
1953—Howard Hawks, director—starring Jane Russell, Marilyn Monroe and Charles Coburn
Anita Loos’s gal pals Lorelei Lee and Dorothy Shaw are brought to brilliant Technicolor life in Howard Hawks’s musical film of her book, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Dorothy, the second banana in Loos’s book, becomes an equal partner in the movie, as played by Jane Russell, who was already a star when the film was made; but Marilyn Monroe’s portrayal of the gold-digging Lorelei made her a star. Her pink-gowned performance of “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” is iconic—and also representative of the way in which the movie, while feasting our eyes on Russell and Monroe, is all about female agency.
