Broken Blossoms
1919—D.W. Griffith, director—starring Lillian Gish, Richard Barthelmess and Donald Crisp
Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks picked out one of the stories in Thomas Burke’s 1917 collection, Limehouse Nights, to recommend to the attention of director D.W. Griffith. Griffith—fresh from the labours of Birth of a Nation (1915) and Intolerance (1916)—turned from the epic mode to the lyric, filmed Burke’s story as Broken Blossoms—and produced a small masterpiece. The movie seems to evoke in visual terms the poetic atmosphere of Burke’s writing. It “exemplifies what was known in Hollywood as the ‘soft style’,” according to film professor Ethan de Seife. “No other film looks like Broken Blossoms.”
This silent film will be accompanied live by VFF favourite, pianist Jordan Klapman.
