The Phantom of the Opera

1925—Rupert Julian, director—starring Lon Chaney, Mary Philbin and Norman Kerry

Universal Pictures’ adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra, The Phantom of the Opera, is one of the first great horror movies; and its central figure, Erik, is the role with which “The Man of a Thousand Faces”, Lon Chaney, is most strongly associated. The famous unmasking scene, in which, for the first time, both Christine and the audience see the Phantom’s face (Chaney’s most famous makeup creation), reportedly led women in the audience to faint, children to bawl, and grown men to step outside for fresh air. And yet, at the heart of this horror tale, there is a love story.

This silent film will be accompanied live by the remarkable young digital accordionist Michael Bridge.
