Sounder
1972—Martin Ritt, director—starring Cicely Tyson and Paul Winfield
Based on William H. Armstrong’s young adult novel (the winner of a Newbery Award), Sounder is a “beautiful film” and “a terrifically moving experience”. It tells the story of a Black sharecropping family in the American south struggling to get by during the Great Depression. The movie appeared on many “ten best” film lists for 1972, and made Oscar history with Best Actor and Actress Academy Award nominations for its two Black leads, Paul Winfield and Cicely Tyson. Roger Ebert said of Sounder, “This is a film for the family to see.”
