Rosemary’s Baby
1968—Roman Polanski, director—starring Mia Farrow, John Cassavetes, Ruth Gordon, Sidney Blackmer, Maurice Evans and Ralph Bellamy
One of the greatest of all horror films, Roman Polanski’s first American production, his adaptation of Ira Levin’s novel Rosemary’s Baby, was a huge success. The movie made a film star of Mia Farrow (already known for her recurring role on TV’s Peyton Place), playing the young wife whose elderly neighbours turn out to be Satanists, and who becomes pregnant with the Devil’s seed. It translated director Polanski from art house to A-list. And it earned Ruth Gordon (just one of a number of veteran Hollywood actors in the cast) an Oscar and a Golden Globe as Best Supporting Actress.
