Great Expectations
1946—David Lean, director—starring John Mills, Valerie Hobson, Alec Guinness, Martita Hunt, Finlay Currie and Jean Simmons
The first of director David Lean’s two Charles Dickens adaptations (Oliver Twist followed in 1948), Great Expectations is considered one of the greatest of British films—in fact, one of the greatest films, period. The opening sequence, in which young Pip encounters the escaped convict Magwitch in the cemetery, is one of the scariest scenes not part of a horror movie. The children of Dickens’s over-the-top imagination—Miss Havisham; Jaggers the lawyer—are faithfully translated into cinema, aided by Oscar-winning cinematography and art direction. Few films have served their source material better.
