Belle de Jour

1967—Luis Buñuel, director—starring Catherine Deneuve, Jean Sorel and Michel Piccoli

Acclaimed director Luis Buñuel’s film version of Joseph Kessel’s novel Belle de Jour won top prizes at the Venice Film Festival, and gave Catherine Deneuve the role for which she is probably best known: Séverine, a frigid housewife who is able to give vent to her erotic fantasies by working secretly during the day at a high-class brothel. Said by Buñuel to be an exploration of “chaste eroticism”, Belle de Jour also considers both the male and the female gaze, and the nature of female power and powerlessness. It has been described as “one of the most mysterious, poetic, complex, and beguiling films ever made”.

Belle de Jour will be screened in French with English subtitles.
