About the Cameco Capitol Arts Centre

Experience Entertainment

The Cameco Capitol Arts Centre is a professional regional theatre located 1-hour and 15 minutes east of Downtown Toronto where you will experience top quality productions, concerts, and special events in the historic and picturesque small town of Port Hope.

The Capitol has received recognition for embracing its history and earning historical status. This has resulted in the theatre playing a role in notable films and television.  Honouring its history as a movie theatre, stage productions often incorporate projections and video as well as other innovative technologies to create an enhanced live-theatre experience.

The Capitol has become a ‘must-see’ Ontario destination that has partnerships with local restaurants, cafes, merchants, accommodations and more to offer a complete “experience” to our guests

The Capitol Theatre

One of Canada’s only remaining “Atmospheric Theatres”, the Capitol opened as a 380-seat talking-picture house in 1930.  Fully restored to its original splendour, it has since evolved into one of Ontario’s leading Regional Theatres presenting Live Professional Theatre, Live Concerts, Films from the Toronto International Film Festival, HD Opera Live from the MET and much more.  You will experience entertainment while sitting comfortably in a Nordic Castle Courtyard complete with twinkling stars in a blue evening sky.

The Sculthorpe Theatre

The A.K. & Bob Sculthorpe Studio Theatre, located on the second floor of the Arts Centre, is a newly renovated 80 to 150-seat open concept, 1360 square foot space with full sound, lighting and multimedia capabilities.  The Sculthorpe Theatre hosts a variety of events from live concerts, theatre, cabarets, weddings and more.  The space is a popular rental venue for its cost, versatility and technological advances.

The entire Cameco Capitol Arts Centre is air-conditioned, and barrier-free and the theatre is equipped with a system for the hearing-impaired.

Renting One of Our Spaces

The Capitol Theatre main stage is a venue that remains highly in demand. Given the popularity of this space and the Port Hope Festival Theatre busy season, we recommend that requests to rent our theatre are made at least one year in advance.  Please note that our live theatre productions occupy our main stage for build time, rehearsals and the shows themselves, making it unavailable to book during the summer live theatre season (Mid May – Mid Sept) and again in early November until the end of the year. Seating for approximately 380.

Our Sculthorpe Theatre upstairs is a studio space with a much more flexible calendar and versatility to accommodate meetings, soirees and private affairs. Depending upon configuration, seating varies, we are also fully licensed for serving alcohol in this space.
